Finding the Right Wheelchair for You

When choosing a new wheelchair, there are several factors to consider. When reviewing these factors, it is usually a good idea for the user and primary carer to discuss together. Think about how you plan to use the chair. For example, is it required for short journeys to the local corner shop, or is a larger chair required for extensive travel and many hours outside the home?

Size, Weight, and Adjustability

Wheelchairs come in many shapes and sizes. The essential features, however, are usually quite similar. Make sure the chosen chair is adjustable to the user’s body size. The specification table will typically provide the ranges for seat height, width, depth, and back height.

Portability

As well as evaluating the seating factors, the portability of each chair should be considered. For example, will it fit inside the car? When considering the weight of your chair, make sure it is light enough for the primary carer to handle.
