View full detailsA walking stick is often the first mobility aid you may find yourself in need of. For many, it starts life as a confidence aid, but as time goes on may become relied upon more to assist with balance.
Finding the Right Walking stick for You
Walking sticks come in many shapes and sizes - thin sticks, folding sticks, and heavier duty tri or quad sticks. Choosing the right stick for your needs and circumstances is very important. Before choosing a stick, think about where and how you plan to use it. For example, is it for light use when walking around the neighbourhood? Or do you plan to use it for long walks in the country?
Strength
Traditional lightweight sticks are often not designed to take the full weight of the user. While strong quad sticks are designed to help take the weight of the user when required.
Grips & Ferrules
Walking sticks come with grips on both ends. Hand grips come in a wide range of shapes and materials. Choose a grip that will comfortably fit the shape of your hand. At the bottom of the stick, you should consider the choice of the ferrule. This will depend on the type of surface you plan to walk on.
Looks
For many, a walking stick is as much a fashion accessory as it is a mobility aid. Choose a stick that you will be confident to walk around with. Some sticks also fold up. Consider these if you are an infrequent user."
